Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping

STCW covers a wide range of maritime disciplines, including navigation, engineering, radio communication, and maritime safety. It ensures that seafarers receive appropriate education and training, gain practical experience, and undergo regular assessments to ensure their skills are up-to-date.

Eligibility for STCW:

- Age: Generally 18 years or older

- Education: High school (10+2) or equivalent

- Must meet medical and physical fitness standards

Certificates Awarded After Maritime Engineering Courses:

After successfully completing STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) courses, individuals are typically awarded the following certificates: Basic Safety Training (BST) Certificate, Advanced Training Certificates, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) Certificate, Security Awareness Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (SATSDSD) Certificate, Medical First Aid Certificate etc.

General Purpose Rating Course

Endorsed by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India, we present a comprehensive 6-month residential GP Rating program, which is tailored to equip cadets with specialized training in the two primary roles within the maritime sector: Deck crew and Engine crew. While separate programs for Deck and Engine Ratings are available, the GP Rating course uniquely combines both, offering comprehensive instruction in both facets.

Eligibility for GP Rating Course:

Certain prerequisites must be met when applying for the general-purpose rating course. These criteria determine your suitability for the desired course. The following are the eligibility requirements for the GP Rating course:

- Successful completion of 10th standard or higher from a recognized board with a minimum aggregate of 40%, and a minimum of 40% in English either in 10th or (10+2).

- Must meet medical and physical fitness standards.

- Vision of 6/6 with no color blindness.

- Age: 18 to 25 years.

Certificates Awarded After Maritime Engineering Courses:

Upon successful completion of the training, the academy will issue the GPR Course certificate and the STCW course certificate, both of which are approved by the Director General of Shipping. Additionally, candidates will receive INDOS & CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate). These certificates hold significant value, serving as identification for seafarers.

Career Progression in Marine Engineering in India:

6-month pre-sea training → Commence as Trainee Ordinary Seaman in Deck / Trainee Wiper in Engine for a minimum duration of 12 months, receiving a stipend ranging from $200 to $400 → Upon obtaining a watchkeeping certificate, serve as AB / Oiler for 12 to 18 months with a salary ranging from $800 to $1200 → Accumulate a total sea time of 24 months, then sit for NCV/FG 2nd mate(Deck) examination/appear for class 4 NCV/FG (Engine) examination → Upon acquiring the 2nd mate certification, take on the role of 2nd Officer or attain the class 4 certificate, enabling service as a 4th engineer with a salary ranging from $3500 to $5500 → Further sea experience and successful examination results can lead to promotion to the rank of Master Mariner/Chief engineer, commanding a salary of $8500 to $12000.

Electro Technical Officer

Presented as a 4-month residential program, this course is meticulously crafted to equip candidates with the essential skills and knowledge demanded in the realm of Electronics and Electrical systems aboard ships.

Eligibility Criteria for ETO Course:

To qualify for enrollment in the Electro Technical Officer course, the following prerequisites must be met:

- A B.E/B.TECH degree (EEE) from an AICTE-recognized college, with a minimum of 50% marks in the final year and 50% in English in 10th / 10+2 / Degree.

- Satisfactory medical and physical fitness.

- Perfect 6/6 eyesight vision and absence of color blindness.

- Age within the range of 18-25 years.

Certificates Awarded After ETO Courses in India:

Upon successful completion of the STCW course, the academy will issue a certificate that is duly approved by the Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. This certificate grants candidates eligibility to join Merchant Ships as Trainee Electrical Officers. Additionally, candidates will receive INDOS and CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate), both of which carry significant importance as identification documents for seafarers.

Electro Technical Officer Career Pathway:

- Engage in a specialized 4-month training program, complemented by a mandatory 4 STCW course endorsed by D.G. Shipping, Govt. of India.

- Commence as a Junior Electro Technical Officer aboard a ship, earning a monthly salary ranging from $900 to $2000 USD.

- With accumulated experience, progress to the role of Electro Technical Officer on a ship, commanding a salary between $2000 and $5000 USD.

Diploma in Nautical Science

Renowned as a premier maritime institution in India offering the DNS program, we provide a comprehensive one-year residential course divided into two semesters. This curriculum is sanctioned by the Indian Maritime University and endorsed by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India. The DNS Course paves the way for a B.Sc. degree in Nautical Science following 18 months of sea service, coupled with the attainment of a 2nd Mate Foreign Going Certificate of Competency. Our training program is tailored to equip cadets for the role of navigating officers aboard Merchant Naval Ships across the global maritime landscape.

Eligibility for DNS Merchant Navy Course:

Several factors determine eligibility for pursuing the DNS course. The following criteria should be taken into consideration when applying:

- Minimum qualification of 10+2 with 60% marks in PCM aggregate or 55% marks in the final year of B.Sc. with Physics / B.E. / B.Tech, and a minimum of 50% marks in English in 10th / 10+2 / Degree.

- Satisfactory medical and physical fitness.

- Perfect 6/6 eyesight vision and absence of color blindness.

- Age requirement falls within 18 to 25 years.

Progression in DNS Course within Merchant Navy:

Upon completion of the 12-month Diploma in Nautical Science (Semester 1 & 2 - IMU) alongside mandatory STCW courses, the career path unfolds as follows:

- Enlistment as a Deck Cadet/Junior Officer for 18 months of onboard ship training spanning semesters 3, 4, and 5 (supported by a Distance Learning Programme by IMU). Attainment of an Advance Diploma in Nautical Science by IMU, accompanied by a stipend ranging from $400 to $600.

- Undertake a 4-month preparatory Post-Sea course, culminating in the acquisition of a 2nd Mate Certificate of Competency bestowed by the Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India. Subsequently, serve as a 3rd / 2nd Navigating Officer on merchant ships, commanding a salary between $3500 and $5500.

- Engage in a 6-month preparatory post-sea course, followed by completion of 18 months of sea service with the designation of a 1st Mate. This stage offers a salary in the range of $5500 to $8500.

- Pursue an Advanced Ship Management Course, culminating in written and oral examinations. Successful completion leads to the acquisition of a Master's Certificate of Competency. As a Master / Captain of the ship, the salary ranges from $8500 to $12000.
